Dagala Landscape Photo Trek

Itinerary

At your arrival at Paro International airport, you will be welcomed by our local Bhutanese tour guide and then transferred you to your hotel. After your good lunch in the hotel hike to the famous Tiger’s nest. It is quite an uphill task and takes around 3-4 hours at an average speed. The hike is basically added on your first day just to accustom trekkers with the Himalayan altitude. According to the legend, Guru Padmasambhava visited the site in the eight century and meditated for three months in a cave and then donning his terrifying form of Dorje Droloe subjugating the evil spirits. Centuries later, in 1684, the 4th Druk Desi, Tenzin Rabgyel, built a monastery on the site and gave it the name Taktang, as a reminder of its origins in the Padmasambhava legends.

In the morning hour drive to Chunzom and then takes, 8km drive up to Genekha village, which marks the beginning of your trek. After crossing the bridge you then gradually ascent uphill through thick forest of pine and oaks until you reach a huge rock platform from where you will get a good view of the valley below. Continue your climb for another 1.5 hour until you finally reach your campsite at Gur at 10,824ft/3300m.

Today you have a long trail and is quite tough as you have to climb for 1000m in 12km until you reach the Pagalaptsa pass, taking you through mixed forest of fir, spruce, birch and rhododendron. The path finally widen through refreshing meadows adorned with wild flowers if you are here in April – June. If the weather is clear, the high ridge affords great views of the Dagala range and the surrounding mountain vegetation including the spectacular views of Mt. Kanchenjunga (Sikkim) and numerous other popular peaks of Bhutan including Mt. Jomolhari, Jichu Drakey etc. As you descent from the pass, you gradually enter the wide-open meadow leading you through yak herders stone house and yaks, grazing in the open slope and at your last section a gentle climb takes you to your campsite near Utsho Lake.

Today you will explore numerous small lakes in the vicinity. Several hiking trail takes you to explore and take pictures of the lakes and the surrounding landscape. If you have obtained a license, you could even choose to go for fishing, if interested notify us for the necessary arrangement while booking your trip.

In the morning hour, the trail begins with a steep climb for an hour to the western side of the ridge. From here the trail offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountain range including the permanent snow capped peaks like Jomolhari, Jichu Drakey, Tsherimgang, Gangchen Ta, Khangbum, Masagang, Tshendengang and Mt. Kanchenjunga (Sikkim). The surrounding meadow blankets with several wildflowers ablaze with blood red, blue and pink in April – June. Continue your trek passing through several yak herders stone house and after crossing a small stream your trail gradually ascent for a while and then finally reach your campsite at Panka above the tree line.

Today your tail continues with climbing several passes but none of them required a major climb. En-route you will encounter with different varieties of blue poppy (June-July) along with other mountain birds. Crossing the Tale-La (4,180m) you gradually descent to Talakha Goemba where you will be treated with breathtaking view of Thimphu city lies in a steep valley with alpine forest and numerous golden topped monasteries. A short walk from the goemba will finally leads you to the parking lot where your vehicle will pick you up and lead you to your hotel in Thimphu.

The capital Thimphu has something for all visitors. In the morning hour drive to visit the National Institute of Zorig Chusum, which offers a six years course on Bhutan arts and crafts. Visit the National Library just close to the National Institute. It was opened in 1967 to preserve the ancient Bhutanese texts and act as a repository for thousands of old religious manuscripts and religious books. Driving further south visit the giant Buddha statue that stands atop the hillside overlooking the valley below. Coming down visit the complex of National Memorial Chorten built in 1974 in memory of the Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. The complex is visited by thousands of people from all walks of life. If time permits make a short visit to the National Archery Ground to watch the archery match.
